in 1968, the hochschule für gestaltung in ulm closed.
today, almost 50 years later, this fundamentally functional and minimalist design methodology is urgently needed as rarely seen before. this current design ethos, which is characterised by aftermath of the postmodernism and its antifunctional styling, must be halted. the arbitrariness and ignorance of designer can no longer represent an acceptable motive.
designing means to create an entire solution. that is why the ‘ulm design’ which includes values and teachings by otl aicher and hans gugelot have to be accepted again. — the analysis of specific functions and the relationships between man and object lead to characteristic, functional object solutions. with this principle, all the issues of our designed environment can be grasped. on this basis goods are constructed with a clear use and a consistent function.
completely better solutions than previously existing shall serve as a claim of an honest designer. it is the special duty of the currently growing generation to fight for it. i count myself among these designers.
